80 female artists represented together in 1 place

Recently I viewed a FREE exhibit titled: Autoritratte “Artiste di Capriccioso e Destrissimo Ingegno” at the Uffizi.

What was being shown here were 80 pieces (some never seen before and some as recent as 2010) all done by women artists with the subject matter being themselves. These 80 self portraits reflect on the pitiful fact that out of 1,700 artist self-portraits in the Uffizi collection, only 7% are done by women. A crazy but very true percentage that makes me, being a female artist myself, really sad, because these women have talent!

Each piece unique and moving in it’s own right. The colours they chose, face and body position, textures, brushwork and on and on. The same concept but all different, representing the face of themselves in a medium that is their livelihood.

I tried to find all images I jotted down at the exhibit, but sadly some are too rare and too personal so be found on the web.

-on a side note, the photo #6 by Therese Schwartze van Duyl does not do the actual piece justice. The yellow used on the scarf, with the texture applied with such confidence contrasted with the navy blue skirt made this piece my favorite.
